How to choose a good bike for my child?

Comment choisir un bon vélo pour mon enfant ? Mon Vélo

To ensure your child has a safe and enjoyable riding experience, we have prepared some tips to help you choose the right bike for a child

Bike size

The first and most obvious thing to consider is size: make sure to choose a bike that fits your child according to their age.

To help you, wheel sizes in inches are generally associated with an approximate age range:

Of course, this chart provides a general estimate of the appropriate age for each bike wheel size, but the important thing is to consider your child's size, body shape, and skills when choosing a bike.

Sometimes we tend to want to buy a slightly bigger bike to anticipate the child's growth so they can keep it longer. This is very often a false good idea…

Your child will not be comfortable and will tire more quickly on a bike that is too big, as the ergonomics are not suited to their age or body shape. Besides discouraging their learning, this could also compromise their safety.

At Mon Vélo, we offer an exchange program when your child's bike becomes too small, so they always have a bike that fits them.

Seat height

The child's bike seat is just as important to consider if you want your child to have fun in good conditions.

You need to adjust the seat height so your child can get on it effortlessly and both feet can touch the ground when seated. They should also be able to bend their knees while pedaling without their knees hitting the handlebars.

The trick is to start with the lowest setting and then raise the saddle 5mm at a time to find the ideal height. Be careful not to exceed the minimum mark on the seat tube. For safety reasons, this mark should never be visible.

Bike weight

Avoid choosing a bike that is too heavy for your child: the lighter the bike, the easier it will be for them to maneuver and control. You need to find the right balance between agility and reliability to ensure your child's safety.

Brakes

For your child, prioritize hand brakes rather than coaster brakes. Make sure they can easily reach the brake handles and get into the habit of testing them regularly to avoid unpleasant surprises. Rim brakes are also generally recommended over disc brakes because they offer more gradual braking.

Small stabilizer wheels

If your child is a beginner, you should consider buying them a bike equipped with small stabilizer wheels to help them learn to balance their bike safely during maneuvers.

Safety & reflective devices

An equally important factor is wearing a helmet Wearing a helmet is not mandatory in Quebec, but we strongly recommend it.

Also make sure the bike is equipped with reflectors and other safety devices to maximize its visibility and, therefore, your child's safety.

In summary, you should prioritize your child's comfort and safety when choosing their bike. Thanks to you, they will be in the best conditions to progress quickly!
