How to maintain and repair your bike like a pro?

The mechanics of bikes is undoubtedly one of the most elegant. Bare and simple, it facilitates repairs and maintenance. By learning how to maintain and repair your bike, you extend the lifespan of your two-wheeler while preparing yourself for any unexpected events on the bike paths.

Why is it important to regularly maintain your bike?

Your bicycle is in direct contact with external elements. Puddles, dust, mud, dirt, and all pollutants degrade your bike and accelerate its wear. To keep it in good condition for a long time, some simple maintenance like cleaning the chain makes all the difference for its lifespan.

In addition to regular maintenance, professionals recommend doing a thorough cleaning in the spring and at the end of the season. Indeed, if you store your bike during the winter, you must ensure it is ready for the new season and that it does not get damaged during storage. Fortunately, with some maintenance, you can keep it ready at all times.

How to maintain your bike between each ride?

Between each ride of the bike, check the main components like the tires, saddle, brakes, and gears on your bike and make sure to take care of them. Also consider wiping sensitive parts of your bicycle with a soft cloth to remove impurities.

Inspection of your bike tires

Make sure that your tires are neither torn nor cracked anywhere. If so, replace your tire to avoid a frustrating flat on the road.

During your inspection, observe if the tread is visible. It is easy to see since it is a different color from the tire. This underlying layer is fragile and could be damaged on the road. If you see it, replace your tire.

Finally, check if your tire pressure is adequate. Know that the optimal pressure level varies from one tire to another. Refer to the manufacturer's manual. Use a pressure gauge to assess the air level in your bike tire. Most bike pumps offer this option.

To determine the correct height of your saddle, get on your bike and place one of the pedals in the lowest position. Place your foot on the pedal and make sure your leg is neither too straight nor too stretched out. Test the adjustments that work for you. The key is that you can easily put your foot on the ground while using the full length of your legs.
